Northfield was platted by John W North in 1856. Early on it was an agricultural center and supported lumber and flour mills on the Cannon River. It then moved to dairy and beef and now corn, soybeans, and hogs.
Northfield is a center of higher education with Carleton College and St. Olaf College.
